# crunch time

A transition window during an intelligence explosion in which AI systems are already capable of substantially accelerating AI R&D while remaining short of a state where they are uncontrollably powerful. The term highlights a potentially brief period in which humans may still be able to redirect or slow AI development and use whatever useful AI labor is available for safety and defensive work; it does not imply that the systems are competent at all such work, and its exact boundaries and duration are scenario-dependent.
