# pivotal act

A guarded, deliberately high-threshold term for an action or achievement that by itself makes a very large positive difference to the long-run future; in AI alignment discourse, it often means an AI-enabled intervention sufficient to end or sharply reduce the acute risk from unaligned AI. It does not entail a particular mechanism, and the claim that safety requires one discrete pivotal act is disputed.
